Venom, the strength-enhancing drug forever coursing through Bane's vains, proved to be one of the Dark Knight's greatest adversaries when he became hooked on the stuff during the events of Batman: Venom.

The story arc serves as a cautionary tale highlighting the dangers of substance abuse and depicts Bruce Wayne in some of his darkest hours.

The Caped Crusader revels in torturing criminals as he teeters over the abyss and this culminates in a memorable cover design in which a bedraggled and bearded Bruce Wayne lies slumped into a chair, pills spilling from a bottle in his hand.

When Batman's addiction reaches critical mass, he insists that Alfred Pennyworth locks him up in the Batcave for 30 days in one of the best cold turkey depictions since's Trainspotting's ceiling-walking baby.

Venom is one of the most powerful Batman comic stories of the 1990s, but anyone who thinks we're ever going to see an iconic superhero abusing drugs on the big screen must be high themselves.
