10 Insanely Expensive Movies You Forgot Even Existed

Wally Pfister had built up a reputation as one of modern cinema's finest cinematographers, mostly due to his frequent collaborations with Christopher Nolan dating all the way back to Memento. When he eventually decided that he wanted to be the guy calling the shots, he pretty much torpedoed his own career as a result.

Unsurprisingly, his directorial debut Transcendence tried to be more than a little Nolan-esque, aiming for a combination of big ideas and somber self-reflection from an ensemble cast made up of A-list stars and reliable supporting players, but the finished product turned out to be laughably contrived and a pale imitation of his mentor's work.

The latest in a long line of disappointing Johnny Depp vehicles, the would-be intellectual sci-fi squeaked past the $100m mark at the box office, which isn't great for a project that was rumored to cost between $100m and $150m. Hollywood's least troublesome Pfister hasn't worked since, with his influence as Nolan's go-to guy fading from memory almost as quickly as Transcendence did.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
