10 Insanely Hyped Movies That Flopped HARD
5. Terminator Salvation
The Terminator franchise has been on a downward spiral since Judgement Day came and went, but nobody can knock the ambition behind its fourth instalment, Salvation.
This was the first Terminator movie set entirely in the future, and the plan was for it to kickstart a new trilogy connected to the events of the James Cameron originals. Fresh off the back of Dark Knight success, Christian Bale was quite the coup for the lead role of John Connor and the special effects budget made almost anything possible.
As is often the case with movies that flop hard, lukewarm reviews were partly behind Salvation's downfall. Critics found Bale's performance one dimensional, the story predictable and the lack of Schwarzenegger (in physical form, at least) unforgivable.
Terminator isn't quite one of those franchises that's critic-proof, and when one of its contemporary sequels stinks up Rotten Tomatoes, there are consequences, in this case, box office returns of $371.4 million against a budget of $200 million.
Although that doesn't sound like a disaster, when you factor in Warner Bros paying $60 million to distribute it in the US and Sony handing over $100 million for the global rights, Salvation bombed harder than the nukes Skynet launched on judgement day.
