10 Insulting Ways Characters Were Killed Off Between Horror Movies
1. Elizabeth Shaw Becomes a Failed Experiment - Alien: Covenant
Somehow, the Alien franchise managed to mess up yet another character’s death – that of Dr. Elizabeth Shaw – between 2012’s Prometheus and 2017’s Alien: Covenant.
Admittedly, neither of Ridley Scott’s sequels are universally beloved, but many viewers still enjoyed Shaw’s spirited determination throughout Prometheus. She clearly deserved to make it out alive, too, having endured all sorts of trials and tribulations – including performing surgery on herself to remove an alien baby – before departing for the otherworldly Engineers’ homeworld.
In particular, Shaw was hoping to finally discover why the Engineers created humanity, and regrettably, she brought with her the remains of scientifically curious android David.
Undoubtedly, Alien: Covenant could’ve picked up with the progression of their quest, thereby allowing her and viewers to get the answers needed to resolve one of Prometheus’ biggest loose ends.
Instead, the film explains that David massacred the Engineers on their planet while also making Shaw a part of his neomorph experimentations to create something superhuman. When confronted by the crew of the Covenant, he tells them that she died when their ship crashed, but it’s his barbaric tests on her that truly led to Shaw’s demise.
It’s a misguided move that disregards Shaw’s prior agency and power. On the plus side, at least Scott knew to show what David did to her body between films, right?
