10 Intense Performances In Heart-Breaking Movie Scenes

5. Timothy Spall €“ All Or Nothing

Timothy Spall has made a name for himself in the mainstream for slimy supporting roles in Harry Potter and Sweeney Todd but put the spotlight on him and he truly shines. His work with British film director Mike Leigh has shown his potential in films such as Secrets & Lies, Life Is Sweet, Topsy-Turvy and All Or Nothing. All or Nothing touches on an idea that no other films dare to mention. It focuses on how love can fade away from spouses. In the heat of the tensions, Spall€™s character quietly confronts his wife, played by the equally excellent Lesley Manville, that she doesn€™t love him anymore. She dodges the accusation, finding it insignificant in light of events, but Spall keeps pressing while she breaks down, knowing it€™s true. It€™s a bleak reality, one anti-cinematic, but Spall and Manville€™s vulnerability make it sensitive and sincere, especially when on the surface you can€™t imagine them thinking so deeply. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiuVfsfjX0w His next film coming out this year seems to be his Leigh€™s most ambitious. Mr. Turner, a biopic of the volatile painter, starring Spall, and looks to be his best hope at an Oscar nomination, already winning Best Actor at the Cannes film festival, something he claimed to be his first prize.
