10 Intensely Harrowing Films

9. A Serbian Film (2009)

Serbian Film Milos is a retired hardcore porn performer with a wife and young son. He has rapidly dwindling economic security and he is desperate to move his little family out of Serbia. An offer for a hardcore porn part comes to Milos from an independent producer. Milos is sceptical at first, but his desire to get money and to get the heck out of Serbia propels him into taking the part. Things are weird from the outset. He stumbles across a young girl called Jeca bing abused by her mother. He is also inducted into a porn sub genre called New Born Porn - in which his producer Vukmir has his assistant Raša rape a new born baby. Milos wakes up covered in blood, at a total loss as to what has been going on. He returns to the set and finds some films. Upon viewing them he discovers that he beat and raped Jeca's mother before decapitating her and inducing rigor mortis. A lot more unsavoury and vomit inducing things happen, including an unconscious Milos being sodomised, a double rape sequence in which Milos and a masked man have sex with two bodies under a sheet - the victims are Milos' son and wife. When Milos finds out the identity of the victims, a wild melee breaks out and Milos shoots everyone apart from Raša whom he kills by sticking his penis into Raša's eye socket. In the grand finale to these perverse shenanigans, Milos and his wife decide that they - including the son - should all die together. They get into bed and Milos fires a gun, killing the three of them. A film crew enters the bedroom and a man starts unzipping his trousers. The director says "Start with the little one". If the events described above are not regarded as harrowing, then I clearly don't know the definition of the word. All of the sexual stuff is really beyond the pale. Sick, repulsive and transgressive are a few more words I would use for A Serbian Film. The whole thing is one long harrowing spectacle with baby rape, decapitation, incest, necrophilia to keep you 'entertained'. The shot I found to be completely outrageous is during Milos' freak out. He sticks his dick through Raša's eye hole. Why he would choose to kill him in this manner? Why not just shoot him like the others? It is merely a chance for more deviancy for the director. Ultimately, it is a hard film to sit through and you will not be hitting the play button on your DVD remote to watch it again in a hurry.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
