You can always count on Rob Zombie to ruffle a few feathers and that’s exactly what he does with 31, which he swears is his most violent picture to date. Loaded with chainsaw decapitations, Nazi midgets and torture-loving clowns, it’s a promise the film makes good on.

Several Zombie regulars (Malcolm McDowell, Daniel Roebuck, Sheri Moon Zombie) are joined by Meg Foster and Judy Geeson for a story about a group of hostages being forced to participate in a violent game called 31 where their opponents are – wouldn’t you know it – a gang of evil clowns (sadly, Sid Haig was unable to participate due to illness).

31 is Zombie’s first crowdfunded film, and kudos to him for not wimping out with a seen-it-all-before found footage movie set in a haunted asylum. If you remember the film for anything it’ll be Richard Brake’s performance as Doom Head, a twisted sumbitch who grins like a shark and gets all the best lines.

“You may think you see a grease-painted performer sitting before you,” he says in an opening monologue. “But trust me – I am not here to brighten your dismal day. I am here to end your miserable life.”
