Knocked Off - The Blair Witch Project
If The Blair Witch Project was structured like an ordinary horror flick, it probably would've had no lasting impact on cinema. But since the film was presented and advertised as found-footage, viewers flocked to the cinema in droves, believing it was authentic.
Even though we now know the people in the film were actors, The Blair Witch Project brought in hundreds of millions of dollars, proving the genre was a gold mine. Although there've been similar films like Paranormal Activity that dominated the box office, most found-footage films are let down by bad acting, poor improvisation, and incessant shaky-cam.
However, one exception is the Spanish horror [REC]. In this film, a reporter called Angela covers a story inside a fire station where the residents have been infected by a mysterious virus. When Angela discovers the virus turns the victims into savage killers, she does everything she can to escape.
The docu-handheld style may have been done to death by this point but [REC] feels like it accomplished what The Blair Witch Project was trying to do. With its claustrophobic atmosphere, stellar cast, and deserved jump scares, [REC] might be the best found-footage film ever.
