10 Last Minute Movie Decisions That Shaped Your Favourite Films
8. Bruce Has A Breakdown (Jaws)
There's a point to be made that many of the films on this list would not have had the blueprint for big-budget success if it wasn't for Steven Spielberg's box office gobbler, Jaws.
Between the masterclass in tension and Oscar worthy performances from his leading performers, Spielberg looked to have stumbled upon the recipe for Hollywood dynamite. Nevertheless, all was not well on the set of the underwater monster flick, as one of the film's most important stars hit a snag early on.
A fairly fresh director at the time, Spielberg was insistent on having a mechanical, physical shark on set for the scenes involving the beast. The producers on the other hand wanted real life footage of an actual Great White, as they thought it wouldn't be as costly.
Spielberg got his wish but 'Bruce' died one week into shooting, malfunctioning into a useless float. This meant that Spielberg had to rely on the idea of the shark, instead of a big, ominous fish.
Things couldn't have worked out better for the director, as this change in tactic meant that the audience had to fill in the blanks as to what was coming their way - the underscore of the fateful 'dur, dur' didn't hurt either.
