7. What Was The Point Of That Little Bomb?
After saving him from a bunch of Banes cronies Batman gives protege John Blake a bat grenade to free the trapped cops. When it makes little impact, the Bat swoops in and blows the wall of rubble aside. The question here is obvious; why did Batman give Blake such a puny weapon when he had the problem sorted? I understand the film needed Blake to do something actiony before he sat out the climactic set piece, but couldn't there have been something a little stronger than this? All it really does is put Blake in harms way and leave open the question of how Batman got in the Bat so quick (either Bruce was using the autopilot, or were using the Hes Batman argument from the intro). This doesn't even work well from a narrative standpoint. The sudden appearance of the Bat had already been played for laughs earlier in the film and the idea of escalating explosions was explored better in the Joker truck chase, making the whole thing a reference back to much better moments.
