Every teenager dreams of being a superhero, but it's unlikely they'd be willing to endure a post-apocalyptic nightmare world to make that dream happen.

That's not the case in this 2015 flick, which sees a young boy take on the moniker of Turbo Kid and form a ragtag group of heroes to take on the wasteland.

Think The Avengers mixed with Spy Kids mixed with Mad Max.

Turbo Kid is a throwback to the dust-covered action-adventure movies of the 80s. The fight scenes are big, the bright colours of the costumes pop brilliantly against the barren wasteland, and the characters are, in one word, "quirky".

The Kid, played by Munro Chambers, is an extremely likeable protagonist, nerdy without ever straying into annoying. He's got his share of entertaining buddies too, such as a robot girl named Apple and an arm-wrestling cowboy.

Yeah, quirky is definitely the right word.

It's surprisingly bloody for a film with such kitch charm, but it never feels out of place. At just 95 minutes, Turbo Kid absolutely flies by and will make you wish you had a cowboy with a robotic arm for a best friend too.
