10 Lord Of The Rings Extras Who Got Themselves Noticed

2. Irolas

Lord of the Rings
New Line Cinema

Irolas was a character who appeared in the Return of the King, albeit briefly. But he served to excite fans of the books who recognised him as a nod to an omitted but important character. He appears twice as a Captain of the Citadel Guard. When Faramir escapes the clutches of the Nazgûl after the fall of Osgiliath, he delivers the line "It is as Lord Denethor predicted! Long has he foreseen this doom!". And, in a later scene he delivers the news that Faramir's task to retake Osgiliath ended in a slaughter.

These brief interactions were a homage to the character Beregond. Beregond was one of the Citadel Guardsmen who befriended Pippin when he joined the service of Denethor. When the paranoid Steward succumbed to grief and madness, Beregond was the one to save Faramir from being burned, slaying several of the Stewards henchmen in the task. Later he was made Captain of Ithilien for his loyalty.

It's a storyline that was omitted from the film due to the extensive length of the script. But the homage to the character was so well received that he was given his own miniature in the table top board game, as well as an action figure.
