10 Low Budget Films That Reached Number One At The Box Office

8. Halloween II (1981)

Dr Gordon Saw
Universal Pictures

At the time of release, the original Halloween was groundbreaking in its suspenseful depiction of murders by knife, and is often credited with igniting the slasher trend which would go on to dominate horror cinema in the 1980s.

It’s no surprise then that this hotly anticipated sequel would go on to continue the impact started with the original classic. Created for under $2,500,000, Halloween II close to tripled its budget in box office returns during its opening run. Grossing $7,446,508 during the first weekend, the film rose to the very tip of the domestic box office.

Halloween II held the number one spot for a total of five days, beginning with its opening weekend, and then jumping back to the top for the following weekend too.
