10 Low Budget Films That Reached Number One At The Box Office
5. The Devil Inside (2012)
Possession and exorcism films rear their little demonic heads out from the nether every few years or so, with some being wildly more successful than others. Whilst William Friedkin’s 1973 classic The Exorcist still stands as the critically acclaimed king of this ethereal sub genre, that doesn’t stop attempted usurpers like The Devil Inside from trying.
Shot in a faux documentary style, this $1,000,000 film was marketed to audiences as a ‘grittier’ Paranormal Activity, obviously trying to capitalise on the runaway success of that micro budget haunting.
Something went massively right, as The Devil Inside spent a luxurious four days atop the domestic box office charts and pulled in a sweet slice of returns in the name of $33,732,515. Whilst commercially successful, audiences and critics were not at all kind to this arguably sub-par paranormal offering.
