10 Lowest Grossing Superhero Films
7. The Crow: City Of Angels
Worldwide Gross: $17,917,287
Lacking the style, wit, and terrific urban hell production design that characterized Alex Proyas’ The Crow back in 1994, this sequel (the last to receive a theatrical release) seems hell-bent on doing everything wrong. It’s basically the first film all over again, except Vincent Perez is no Brandon Lee and director Tim Pope struggles to fill Proyas’ shoes. Tellingly, he never directed another feature.
He does cast some rockers in supporting roles, though, and it’s worth watching just to catch Iggy Pop as a thug and Ian Dury in a sympathetic turn as the neighbour who helps our heroes. What helps shoot the film in the foot is its slavish devotion to the original, including a non-stop rock soundtrack that just isn’t in the same league (you could say similar things about Salvation, the third Crow film).
Whereas Proyas memorably used The Cure’s Burn for Eric Draven’s transformation into the Crow, City Of Angels is oddly unaffecting, with a bunch of second-rate songs cobbled together for a promotional soundtrack CD. You know you're in trouble when the most memorable song is Rob Zombie's cover of I'm Your Boogie Man by KC And The Sunshine Band.
