3. Goodfellas
Goodfellas is Scorsese's best film in terms of actual directorial prowess. There is never a moment that isn't completely enthralling and being used to drive the story forward. The camera is used to stylize the world of organized crime but through this stylization it also gives the audience an incredibly real story that is both poignant and tragic. Goodfellas is a very long film but the momentum makes it feel much shorter than it actually is. The narrative covers so much of Henry Hill's life and exploits that once the movie has finished you feel as though you know him. This is quite possibly the greatest achievement in Scorsese's career since he is able to fully bring the viewer into the world that he is presenting with such a subtle touch you feel as though it's your own world as well as Henry's.
