10 Marvel Comics You Must Read Before Phase 3

Phase 3 Infinity
Marvel Comics

Film: Captain Marvel (November 2, 2018)

Shedding her Ms. Marvel moniker and black leotard for a more purposeful name and functional outfit, Captain Marvel was re-introduced to the Marvel universe by Kelly Sue DeConnick. This works best as a blueprint rather than a specific plot outline, offering up a grand conflict with a look into her origins as a pilot gifted superpowers by an alien machine.

The Enemy Within picks up with Carol Danvers suffering from a brain tumour that prevents her from flying or using her powers. Yon-Rogg, the Kree warlord responsible for her origins, returns to transform the Earth, using her tumour as a source of his power. In the end, Marvel flies off into space and lets the tumour overcome her to strip Yon-Rogg of his powers, at the cost of her mind and memories.

This emotional-based conflict allows for a retrospective into her origins and integrates her into MCU. Gender and sexuality have nothing to do with the character, and the story is both funny and stirring. The entirety of DeConnick’s run should serve as a guide for the character, but this specific conflict lends itself best to an introductory film.
