10 Massively Underrated War Movie Performances
7. Tom Hardy As Farrier - Dunkirk
It speaks volumes to the ineffable quality of Tom Hardy's performance in Dunkirk that the Venom star has approximately 10 lines of dialogue throughout Christopher Nolan's 2017 war epic, but still turns in a magnificent turn as Farrier, a.k.a. Fortis One.
A Spitfire pilot lending invaluable air support in the skies over the British Channel and Dunkirk, Hardy's aviator manages to efficiently (and superbly) convey a cascade of feelings. Remarkably, he manages to do this despite having his facial features obscured by an oxygen mask for the vast majority of the film.
The segments depicting Farrier in aerial combat are nail-biting, and the climactic moment in which Farrier decides to sacrifice the remainder of his fuel also serves as a notable highlight for this criminally unappreciated role.
Eschewing a safe return home in order to protect the stranded Allied troops, the vast range of emotions as Farrier wrestles with his impossible choice and the subsequent realisation of the consequences of his actions are conveyed with no more than Hardy's eyes. Breathtaking stuff.
