10 Massively Underrated War Movie Performances

5. Mark Wahlberg as Marcus Luttrell - Lone Survivor

Saving Private Ryan Wade
Universal Pictures

Depicting the disastrous real-life events of Operation Red Wings, Peter Berg's "Lone Survivor" is decidedly not the most authentic war film out there when it comes to strict historical accuracy. With that said, the movie is still a gripping, visceral ride - due in large part to Mark Wahlberg's take on the titular character, Hospital Corpsman First Class Marcus Luttrell.

The only Navy SEAL from the initial reconnaissance force to make it out of the Afghan mountains alive, Wahlberg's imposing physical presence lends grounded legitimacy to the role of this elite soldier with ease. The Academy Award nominee also demonstrates his dramatic range flawlessly throughout. He's utterly believable as this hard-as-nails marksman when the bullets start flying, but the moments in which his iron exterior cracks to reveal a battered, terrified human being beneath are even more impressive.

Wahlberg's action star credentials marked him as a sure-fire casting success story long before "Lone Survivor" debuted in 2013, but the performance he gives here transcends the aura associated with his usual action roles and then some. Textbook stuff from Marky Mark, it's a crying shame that most critics were more concerned with the film's historical inaccuracies.
