In Thor: The Dark World's post-credits scene, Thor returns to Earth and gives his on-again off-again girlfriend Jane Foster a big ol' snog, which seemed to indicate that we'd be seeing a lot more of her in the future. But strangely, we haven't seen her since.

She was name-dropped in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, but then, in Thor: Ragnarok, she was flippantly removed from the equation when Thor mentions that he and Jane dumped each other in a "mutual dumping". This means that we went from The Dark World's lovey-dovey ending right into Ragnarok's offscreen break-up, with basically nothing in between. So what happened here?

Well, the answer is simple: they broke up. And this scene was filmed. And then it was cut from the movie. For some reason. Let us explain.

In The Dark World's alternate, deleted ending, we actually see Thor and Jane have a conversation in which she explains why she can no longer be with him. Basically, she feels like she belongs on Earth and not Asgard, and since Thor obviously has certain commitments to Asgard, she decides that their relationship just cannot work.

And no, Thor, it wasn't mutual - she dumped your ass hard.

It's not clear why this was scrapped, because for one thing, it's a great scene, and for another, it provides some much-needed connective tissue in the story of Thor and Jane. On the plus side, she's set to return in the upcoming Thor: Love & Thunder, so maybe their weird offscreen break-up will be addressed relatively soon.
