10 MCU Fates Worse Than Death

5. Thanos Gets What He Wants... But At What Cost?

Out of all the Marvel movies, Thanos has to be one of the most complex villains that audiences have ever seen. Though he has been hinted at ever since his first appearances in the end credits of the first Avengers movie, his plan to tear the world down to half of its population actually sounds believable coming from his purple mug. Thanos may have accomplished his goal, but it was done at the expense of one of his greatest loves.

When acquiring the Soul Stone, Thanos is told that he has to lose that which he loves in order to actually retrieve the stone. While it seems he has no compassion for anyone in the universe, his love for Gamora does end up trumping anything else, leaving him no choice but to throw his adoptive daughter off the cliff's ledge to her death.

It's bad enough seeing your own daughter lay motionless on the snowy ground, but things get even more heartfelt when Thanos finally snaps his fingers. Almost on another plain of consciousness, Thanos sees his young daughter asking him if he fulfilled his goal. He does seem proud of what he accomplished, but when he says that it cost him everything, it feels genuinely heartfelt.

Thanos may have been set in his ways, but annihilating half the universe not only marked the end of some of the Avengers, but also some of the most important people in the Mad Titan's life.
