There aren’t many characters you could call heroes whose first act in the MCU was to kidnap a child from his loving family and use him to steal things the bigger Ravagers couldn’t reach. Yet this was exactly how Yondu was introduced to the franchise.

He may have been a father figure to Peter Quill in his youth, but the first Guardians of the Galaxy film saw Yondu put a bounty on Quill's head, threaten to kill him multiple times, and intend to sell the Orb to the highest bidder and put the entire universe at risk for a quick payday.

His intentions aside however, he did help in the defence of Xandar, and while he still continued his Ravaging ways in spite of helping save the world, he still butted heads with the Guardians of the Galaxy. This was until he was forced to confront Ego, the man he actually saved Peter from all those years ago.

Not only did he help defeat Ego, again contributing to the saving of the galaxy, he gave his own life to save Peter’s. He was a true Guardian of the Galaxy, and though he wasn’t a perfect dad, he was what Peter had wanted and needed all along.
