2. The Customer Is Always Right Sin City (2005)
Dimension FilmsThe opening scene of Sin City isn't the flashiest but it sets the tone perfectly for the film. Josh Hartnett plays The Salesman, a charismatic young gentleman who makes small talk with The Customer (played by Marley Shelton), which we presume at first to be a come-on. It's unclear what their past involves even as they embrace in a passionate kiss. Then out of nowhere, The Salesman shoots her with a silenced pistol, and its over. The Salesman then utters the inspired line, Ill never know what she was running from. Ill cash her check in the morning, as we zoom out to reveal the stunning cityscape before it transforms into the movies title. This scene is a perfect example of nameless characters who can still leave quite the impact on a film. FYI, according to Frank Miller, The Customer had an affair with a member of the Mafia. When she tried to break it off, the mobster swore he would kill her when she wasn't expecting it, and in the worst way imaginable. So, she does what any reasonable person would do. She hires a hit-man to kill her before the mobster could do it himself. Makes sense.
