10 Messed Up '80s Horror Movies That Must Be Seen To Be Believed

If you liked Re-Animator, you'll probably like From Beyond, another silly movie from Stuart Gordon with some insane gore. A scientist invents a machine called the Resonator, which allows humans to see into a realm that's normally imperceptible. That realm is mostly just full of eel-like creatures which fly around everywhere but that humans can't see. Doctor Pretorius is bitten by one of them and begins to transform into a monster, and that's depicted with some of the grossest special effects you can find in an '80s horror flick.

Seriously, the doctor's face splits open, his skin looks like it's melting off, and he later morphs into a worm creature that resembles something out of The Thing. At one point, his head bursts open to reveal some sort of alien mouth which gnaws on a woman's face. There's also a scene of a guy's skin being eaten off him while he's still alive, and another where a man's eye is bitten out of its socket. What the hell kind of movie is this?

The plot is acceptable, but the special effects are the real star of the show. They look stunning, and it's hard not to wonder why you never see horror movies like this anymore with crazy practical effects. As evidenced by the 2011 remake of The Thing, sometimes CGI just isn't the same.
