10 Meta Horror Movies That Deserve More Attention

9. Director's Cut

The Final Girls
Epic Pictures

In Director's Cut , wannabe director, Herbert Blount (played by legendary magician Penn Jillette) is crowdfunding a movie called Knocked Off, starring Missi Pyle. After becoming infatuated with Missi, Herbert prepares to hijack the production, so he can make her the lead and his lover.

When Missi catches Herbert stalking her, the deranged fanboy kidnaps the Dodgeball actress, and steals all the footage. Herbert uses amateur editing and special effects to insert himself into the movie, so he's depicted as the hero and Missi's love interest. Unsurprisingly, things go south for Herbert very quickly.

As wacky as the premise is, the presentation is more bewildering. Director's Cut's narrative works like a making-of-documentary-within-a-film. (This means it's a fake documentary that's documenting a fake director's cut for a fake movie. Yes, it is really that wild.)

The way it includes behind-the-scenes material, interviews, and a commentary track from the filmmakers, actors, and crew, makes the whole project look surprisingly legit. Not only is this level of self-referential humour apparent throughout, cinema fanatics will get a kick out of the movie, since Director's Cut highlights the difficulty of filmmaking and the absurdity of the industry.
