8. Anthony Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal) - Jarhead (2005)

Christ, modern warfare looks boring. If your commanding officer doesnt frag you, then the dullness of being in the army today will surely finish you off. A character that relates to the phenomenon of present-day combat, in which humans sit around and wait while war machines and robots get all the fun, Anthony Swofford is an example of why traipsing into a war zone now would simply be mind-numbingly uninteresting. After days on end spent doing nothing but train, hydrate and clean your rifle, Jarhead makes the argument that youll end up trying to kill something just to alleviate the boredom. In Sam Mendes underrated Gulf War flick, his troops are driven mad by the tedium, turned into psychopathic killers then subsequently given nothing to kill. Swofford and his fellow troops never even fire their weapons during their Iraqi campaign, yet still the scars theyre left with are as deep as if theyd been fighting on the front line.
