10 Military Characters That Make National Service Look Terrifying

9. Sergeant Barnes (Tom Berenger) - Platoon (1986)

platoon barnes While heading for the front, you€™ll guess your Staff Sergeant at least can€™t be as bad as your former drill instructor. Guess again. Sgt. Barnes is a gruff, whisky-soaked sonofabitch who will kill you just for being a grinning, weed-smoking drugs monkey. It€™s something peacenik Sgt. Elias (Willem Dafoe) finds out the hard way, as Barnes cold-bloodedly mercs him just to get him off his goddamn back. The survival prospects for any peace-loving pacifists called to arms in Barnes€™ company are low, but not quite as low as the occupied civilian population, who he murders as regularly as he eats hot meals, and encourages his impressionable young soldiers to do the same. Barnes is so all-out bad, good guy Charlie Sheen has to resort to offing the Sergeant himself, just to stop that Southern nutcase killing any more of his friends.
