10 Mistakes Directors Hoped You'd Forget By The End Of The Movie
7. Robert Carlyle's Slipping Makeup - The World Is Not Enough
During the final fight between James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) and villain Renard (Robert Carlyle) in The World Is Not Enough, keep a close eye on Robert Carlyle's face and you'll notice a distinct change going on.
Due to the fight taking place in the ruptured, leaky hull of a submarine, the shoot required Carlyle to get wet, which after an extended period caused the scarring makeup applied to his face to start distorting.
After Bond tells Renard that his lover Elektra (Sophie Marceau) is dead, we're shown a close-up of the villain's face, where his facial scarring looks noticeably puckered and weathered compared to the rest of the movie - the scarring being a sheet of makeup rather than his actual skin, of course.
Director Michael Apted ultimately felt that Carlyle's anguished performance in this shot was potent enough that he couldn't bring himself to discard it and use an inferior take where the actor's makeup looked more consistent.
