10 Moments That Literally Stopped Horror Movies

6. Antebellum - The Cell Phone

Antebellum Movie
Lionsgate

If you hadn’t watched the trailers for Antebellum then you could be forgiven for thinking it was a whole other genre than what it really is.

The film opens on a Louisiana plantation, looking to be a period drama based on the lives of the slaves (primarily Janelle Monae’s Eden) and the cruel plantation owners.

The moment that things all turn around and the tone flips is when the 1800’s plantation illusion is shattered. There has been an extended period of stillness as Eden lies in bed, the night quiet outside. Suddenly everything stops and all there is is a ringtone and Eden’s shocked expression.

For a moment everything is still, as the whole period part of the film is shattered and moved past, and we meet Eden again in the modern day, woken up by her own phone at home.

Suddenly a new dimension and momentum is added to the film, all off the back of a sudden moment of complete stillness and confusion.
