Stephen King has a few acting credits to his name, but there's only one film on which he both acted (as the delightfully named ATM man) and directed: cult classic (for that, read "bad") Maximum Overdrive.

It's fair to say that King is a much better writer and he is a director, though he was going through lots of personal issues at the time of the film's production. As revealed by the film's editor, Chuck Verrill to The Daily Mail, making it was something of a nightmare as King was struggling with alcohol and drug addictions - the former of which saw him drinking mouthwash for the alcohol content:

“[Stephen King] was gargling Listerine and popping pills. He was still a nice guy and coherent, but he did seem to be strung out.”

King also later said he had been "coked out of my mind" during filming, but that initially, at least, his issues with drugs didn't affect his work. After all, this was the same period he wrote It and Misery...
