10 More Apocalyptic Horror Movies You Need To See
9. Knowing (2009)
If you had the option of knowing when you were going to die, would you take it? Adding to that, if you could find out when the world was going to end, would you want to know? Those are the questions this movie forces you to ask yourself, as it's a terrifying exploration of knowing the future - yeah, go figure.
Knowing centres on an astrophysics professor, played by Nicholas Cage, who happens upon an encrypted message in a time capsule. This message features number patterns that predict disasters, with the last implying a devastating extinction-level event. He is then forced to act as he tries to decode the numbers and save his family.
This 2009 picture certainly ups the ante when it comes to destruction, as there's plenty of death and dismay to capture the horror of the world ending. It also takes itself very seriously, which some might find aggravating. Still, others will cherish that, as the severe tone accurately captures the anxiety and panic of self-awareness toward your own destruction.
Of course, the movie's star (Cage) is infamously known for his over-the-top performances, which is why it's a shame this gritty and subdued role went under the radar.
