Horror history is littered with monsters that, whether you like it or not, lodge themselves into the pink of your brain and stay with you far longer than you're comfortable with.

Many of the best and most memorable movie monsters have one thing in common. That is, they surprise you. When audiences saw Alien in 1979, you can safely bet that no one had any clue what they were getting themselves into. The xenomorph is considered one of the greatest monsters in cinema - not only because of its brilliant design, but because everything about it was utterly unexpected.

When you know what to expect, it's easy to prepare yourself against it. The best way to make any audience member cower like a puppy during a thunderstorm is to give them something that no amount of preparation could save them from.

The thing is however, not every surprising monster has to be original. Sometimes taking an everyday thing and corrupting it is enough to knock a viewer right off their feet.

Enough with all of that though as it's time to take a look at ten more brilliant horror movie monsters you were completely unprepared for.

10. Godzilla - Shin Godzilla

Godzilla has been in several dozen movies, but outside the 1954 original he's never felt all that terrifying. That is until the creator of the iconic anime series Evangelion took the reigns.

With his Godzilla Anno wants us to remember that at their heart Kaiju flicks are supposed to be horror movies. This Godzilla is completely unlike any done before, with not just two, but three separate evolutionary forms. Gone is the protector of humanity vibe so many of these movies have gone with in terms of their titular monster.

This version is truly a monstrosity in the most literal sense of the word. Inside his mouth is an uneven collection of jagged teeth and blood red connective tissue can be seen mixed in with his dark scales. Speaking of blood, this new Godzilla is bloody with a capital b. Blood explodes from his body when hit with heavy artillery like he's some sort of geyser.

We have an image of what Godzilla is supposed to look like in our heads, but this defied any and all expectations.
