10 More Deleted Movie Scenes That Explain Confusing Moments

3. Faramir's Motivation - The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers

Quite famously, the Extended Editions of The Lord of the Rings trilogy are widely regarded as superior to the theatrical releases, with moments like Gandalf's (Sir Ian McKellen) final confrontation with Saruman, and the latter's death, enriching the story greatly.

While this moment further explored Christopher Lee's character, there was a similar scene in The Two Towers that delved deeper into the lives of Boromir, Faramir, and Denethor (Sean Bean, David Wenham, and John Noble, respectively), and the very unorthodox dynamic between father and sons. It also spoke of a mission given by Denethor to his first-born.

Upon hearing of Elrond (Hugo Weaving) calling a meeting, and guessing that the One Ring had been found, Denethor sent Boromir to Rivendell with the task of bringing the weapon back to Gondor. Though this makes Boromir a far deeper and more conflicted character throughout The Fellowship of the Ring, it is Faramir whose motivations are revealed more so.

Boromir's younger brother asked to go to Rivendell in an effort to prove his quality and worth to the father he loved, yet who despised him in turn, but he was shut down as only Denethor could.

This goes a long way to explaining why Faramir acted how he did when Frodo (Elijah Wood) and the Ring fell into his lap, and why he was so desperate to have it.
