Though it's made abundantly clear that Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) have plenty of bad blood in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise - Beckett mentions they've both "left their mark" on one another in the second film - none of the movies ever explain the specific nature of their quibble.

A deleted scene for the third film, At World's End, however, reveals that in his younger days, Beckett entrusted Sparrow to deliver some human cargo.

Sparrow, feeling that "humans aren't cargo, mate," decided to sack off his contracted employment, freeing the slaves much to Beckett's natural ire. As punishment, Beckett has Sparrow branded with the "P" (for pirate) and burned his ship.

Given that this simple piece of exposition in the four-minute scene adds plenty of shade to their relationship across the movies, it's a damn shame Gore Verbinski couldn't find room for it. Then again, the runtime was already 168 minutes long...
