Bands like Rage Against The Machine, The Stone Roses and Cypress Hill (among others) meant the early 90s were a vibrant time for music fans, but that all came to an end when The Spice Girls released their debut album and ushered in the era of manufactured, crassly commercial pop sensations.

In 1997, they were busy selling their message of “Girl Power” in Spice World, a movie created for them by the men that controlled their careers. Attempting to do for the Fatuous Five what A Hard Days’ Night did for the Fab Four, the film tries to avoid looking like a glorified promotional video by being “hip” and “funny”. The results look suspiciously like what would happen if five Barbie dolls came to life and surrounded themselves with embarrassed looking guest stars.

An inexplicable hit, the movie lowered the bar for pop music, musicals, screen acting and film in general, leaving the door wide open for America’s Got Talent, Justin Bieber and other names on the CIA’s Severe Harsh Interrogation Techniques list.
