10 More Hardest To Watch Horror Movie Moments
7. Happy Birthday - Men (2022)
Writer-director Alex Garland put another notch in the folk horror belt this year with Men, giving the city dwellers among us a hundred more reasons to stay out of the countryside.
Following the death of her abusive husband James (Paapa Essiedu), Harper Marlowe (Jessie Buckley) decides to take a break in the small village of Cotson, Hertfordshire. However, it seems all of the village's inhabitants are rather intimidating, disgusting and unfriendly men -- or, to be more precise, man, as they're all played by Rory Kinnear.
At the film's conclusion, the boundaries between superstition and reality break down as the men lead a surreal and physics-defying assault on the house where Harper is staying. This ends in one of the queasiest sequences put to film this year, as the men give birth to each other in sequence, their bodies contorting and self-mutilating as their bellies swell and each crawls out of the bloodied anus of the last, concluding in the birthing of Harper's dead husband James, who asks her to love him... Because why not?
It's kind of like Ace Ventura but without the sweet, sweet relief of Jim Carrey's elastic mug.
