Both the original and the remake of this film (Funny Games, 2007) have stood the test of time, with the Funny Games concept still making people grossly uncomfortable even over twenty years since its first release.

If you’re a fan of The Strangers and other vicious, unmotivated home-invasion horrors then this is right up your alley, as it details the torment of a family by two sadistic strangers. The strangers make themselves comfortable in the family home, playing torturous ‘games’ with the residents as they keep them hostage.

At all times the tension is so thick that you can feel it through the screen, and when the assailants occasionally break the fourth wall to interact with you, the viewer, you begin to feel the even heavier guilt of being complicit in their crimes.

Good horror doesn’t need spooky ghosts or ancient burial grounds to be scary, and the terror-factor in this film comes from the unpredictability of the intruders’ next actions and the knowledge that a happy ending is out of the question.

It makes you question, it makes you cringe, and sometimes it really makes you just want to turn it off and never think about it again.
