10 More Horror Films Too Scary To Finish

7. The Babadook

This one could prove very controversial because for every one person who thinks that this film is the scariest thing they’ve ever seen, there’s another one who says it barely made them flinch.

Jennifer Kent’s critically acclaimed horror swept through horror fans with a frantic wave of intrigue, telling the chilling story of a widowed single mother and her troubled young son. One night, mother Jennifer reads a pop-up book to her son Sam before bed, which tells the story of a tall, pale monster called Mister Babadook.

Not only is it a brilliantly made film but it has an important deeper meaning, taking the idea of grief and personifying it as a big bad monster that is overtly scary - rather than shying away as an unseen, often overlooked terror.

The Babadook’s appearance and voice will send a shiver down the spine of most viewers, with his lamentation of “if it’s in a word or in a look, you can’t get rid of the Babadook” ensuring you that there’s no escape.

It’s a brilliant bit of filmmaking and if you’re going to insist that there’s not a single ‘please make it stop’ moment in the whole thing, then maybe you should get outside a bit more.
