10 MORE Horror Movie Monsters You Were Completely Unprepared For

Good luck being able to sleep after seeing these creatures of the night.

Looking at Dracula, the Xenomorph, and Pennywise, it's fascinating to see how far horror creatures in cinema have evolved. And yet, monsters still remain a quintessential part of the genre. Not only do these grotesqueries need to have a cool design to leave an impact, but they also have to nail their first impression; fumbling their introduction can ruin the whole movie experience, even if these beasts were built up perfectly up until that point.

As has been established in our previous 10 Horror Movie Monsters You Were Completely Unprepared For, there are trolls, aliens, and ogres that caught everybody off guard the first time they appeared onscreen. More often than not, monsters are bone-chilling because they have a distinctive design, though there are other reasons why these beaties sideswiped even the biggest purists of the genre.

If the movie in question leans into comedy, viewers mightn't expect the monster to be scary, making its skin-crawling reveal more effective. Other times, the nasty critter debuts during a quiet moment, catching people while their guard is down.

Although there are fanatics who drink, sleep, and eat creature features, none of them were likely ready when these ten monstrosities reared their ugly heads.

10. Vera Cosgrove - Braindead

Mum Braindead Dead Alive
Trimark Pictures

Three decades after its release, Braindead is still among the goriest films ever made. Almost every scene of Peter Jackson's OTT zomcom is stuffed with gross-out content, including the undead sex sequence, the ear-in-the-custard shot, and any moment involving the ghoulish baby.

By the time the protagonist, Lionel, shreds an army of zombies with a lawnmower blade, it looks like there's nothing else the campy horror-fest can do. Instead, Braindead saves the most ridiculous scenario for last.

Lionel's supposedly dead mother, Vera, revives herself during the climax, transforming into a colossal monster. With her mangled face, elongated claws, and sagging breasts, it goes without saying that there has never been a zombie quite like Lionel's mom. While Lionel battles this nude giant on top of his house, you don't know whether to laugh or scream, and just when it feels like things couldn't get more bonkers, tendrils shoot out of Vera's body and drag Lionel into her womb.

Although some horror veterans can watch the rest of the stomach-churning action without batting an eyelid, seeing Vera in all her glory is sure to make anyone do a double-take.
