9. Mother Markos - Suspiria (2018)
The primary antagonist of Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria remake is Mother Helena Markos (Tilda Swinton), the grotesquely shriveled old witch who holds dominion over the coven, and from whom the central Markos Dance Academy is named.
In the climax, protagonist Susie (Dakota Johnson) is set to become the young new vessel for Mother Markos, except Susie has a big surprise - she is actually the grand witch Mother Suspiriorum, not Markos.
More to the point, she intends to kill Markos and take the academy for herself, which is exactly what she does in short order.
Markos is helpless to do anything but watch as Susie summons Death itself to rot Marcus to nothing and explode the heads of her most zealous followers.
Though the particulars of precisely what Susie is remain a little ambiguous by Suspiria's end, she was clearly a hell of a lot more than Mother Markos was counting on, that's for sure.
