10 More Horror Movies So Sad You Can Only Watch Them Once
1. The Girl Next Door
The title might remind you of a certain Elisha Cuthbert-starring rom-com, but 2007's The Girl Next Door is a horror film inspired by the real-life murder of 16-year-old Sylvia Likens in 1965.
Reading the Wikipedia page about Likens' abuse and eventual slaying might well be more than enough for many, given that this dramatisation is basically a cinematic endurance trial, with audiences effectively challenged to watch teenager Meg Loughlin (Blythe Auffarth) be tortured to death.
It's a film that pulls no punches and blurs the line between uncompromising dramatic re-enactment and exploitation, but it is certainly viscerally effective in recounting what happened to Likens.
Either way, it's a day-ruining movie that begs to be followed up by something light and frothy, because the images this thing will put in your head are nothing short of nauseating.
The Girl Next Door is seriously hard-going, and you'll almost positively never want to sit through it a second time.
