The Chiodo brothers' Killer Klowns from Outer Space is the cult film that just keeps on giving. Now some 37 years since its release, the picture is as popular as ever - and yet, given its low budget, second-rate effects, ludicrous plot, and shoddy acting, it may not immediately be obvious as to why this is.

A glowing object crashes to Earth just outside the archetypal small town USA, and a pack of murderous klown aliens descends from their Big Top-style spaceship, wreaking havoc against the locals. It is up to a few plucky teens to stop making out and do their darndest to send these klowns back where they came from.

Hammy, cheesy, and laughably acted all round, but with a strong classic horror feel, Killer Klowns has long been a slow-burning fan favourite. With its out-of-this-world premise and penchant for shenanigans - popcorn guns, sinister shadow puppets, ventriloquism with corpses... - the film simply would not have benefitted from prestige acting. Instead, the cast lean into the 1950s monster movie vibe, ala The Blob, and play it with a loud, goofy, retro style that slots right in opposite such out-of-this-world antagonists.
