10 More Horror Movies That Tricked You Into Rooting For The Villain
2. The Zombies - Return Of The Living Dead
As a concept, zombies are fascinating. Because these supernatural creatures are compelled to consume human flesh, they make terrifying villains. But because they are acting out of instinct rather than maliciousness, they are technically victims. Nevertheless, there are few films where the viewer wants the zombies to triumph since being devoured alive is among most painful ways to die.
However, Dan O' Bannon's Return of the Living Dead put a unique spin on this genre. Not only are these zombies cognitive and capable of speech, they can feel pain.
And not just any pain. Since these reanimated corpses have muscles jutting out of sinews or an eyeball popping out of their skull, they constantly experience unimaginable agony. When one zombie is being interrogated, she explains that her kind eats brains because it's the only thing that eases their suffering.
When the zombie talks about the sensation of her own flesh rotting away, you can't help getting a bit teary-eyed. Even though these shambling monsters won't hesitate to take a bite out of your face, at least you know it's nothing personal.
