10 More Important Movie Characters Who Were Killed Off Screen
3. Carla Jean Moss - No Country For Old Men
When WhatCulture previously looked at the subject of important movie characters who were killed off-screen, No Country For Old Men's Llewelyn Moss was a no-brainer of an inclusion.
The death of Josh Brolin's character was shocking and sudden, but he wasn't the only one in that film to die unseen, with his wife, Carla Jean (Kelly Macdonald) falling victim to Javier Bardem's terrifying Anton Chigurh and his fatal coin toss.
During their brief conversation on the phone in the midst of their game of cat and mouse with $2 million at stake, Chigurh offered Llewelyn Moss a way out for his wife, but the latter chose to back himself, aiming to kill his rival before either he or his wife were gunned down. As Anton ultimately outlived Llewelyn, he stuck to his word and went after Carla Jean. He tossed a coin and told his potential victim to call heads or tails, though what came next was left to the audience's imagination.
Though technically there is no confirmation as to whether Carla Jean called right within the confines of the movie, Anton checking his boots for blood as he leaves the house is very telling. Add in the fact that Cormac McCarthy's novel is less ambiguous about her death, it's a fair conclusion to make that her life ended in that room before Anton left.
