In eldritch creature feature The Void, the staff at a hospital find themselves unable to deal with the abundance of patients due to their limited resources and supplies. And just when things look like they couldn't get any worse, a cult besieges the hospital, summoning a legion of interdimensional monsters.

The Void didn't make much money upon its initial release, but it's easy to see why it has since developed a cult following, with the picture exploring Lovecraftian body horror in such a creative way. However, checking it out twice is another story altogether.

Despite the minuscule budget - reported to be under $83,000 - the monstrous imagery on display is horror incarnate. Faces are flayed, a woman gives birth to tentacled creatures, and a man has the entirety of his skin ripped off.

Of course, The Void saves the most disgusting moment for last, as it's later revealed the cult leader is the hospital's head physician, Dr. Powell, who orchestrated the ritual to resurrect his daughter Sarah. Unfortunately, Sarah is reborn as a malformed mass of flesh that looks like the stuff of nightmares. It's genuinely heartbreaking to see her being transmogrified into a monster since she's an innocent child who didn't ask for any of this.

Several plot elements in The Void aren't explained clearly, which may incentivise a rewatch, but after recalling the sickening imagery that appears throughout, viewers are likely to change their mind on that.
