10 More Incredible Horror Movies You’ll Never Watch Again (And Why)
8. The Brood
At least half of David Cronenberg's catalogue could feature on this list since his body horror is difficult to stomach. However, The Brood may be the hardest Cronenberg picture to sit through as most of its haunting imagery involves children.
This 1979 monster flick follows Frank, a father who's involved in a bitter custody battle with his institutionalised wife, Nola. When Frank is assaulted by a deformed child, he believes it's connected to the experimental procedures that Nola's facilitator is performing at his medical centre. Upon investigation, Frank realises the truth is more shocking than he could've ever imagined.
Approaching 46 years after its release, The Brood still remains among Cronenberg's finest work thanks to its gripping set-up, superb acting, and unnerving atmosphere. With that said, this '70s classic is too much for some. Not only are the mutants horrible to look at, they're constantly squealing and screeching, which is deeply unpleasant to listen to. Also, how the brood came to be is so disturbing, it honestly feels like something that could only exist in a nightmare.
Though The Fly and Videodrome have plenty of trademark Cronbergian visuals, The Brood gets under your skin in a way unlike anything else.
