10 MORE Incredibly Clever Moments Of MCU Movie Foreshadowing
3. Peter Quill’s Dad(s) - Guardians Of The Galaxy
Early in James Gunn’s
beloved contribution to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Yondu refers to Peter
Quill’s thus-far unseen father as jackass while justifying his guardianship of
the now-grown boy (get it? Guardianship?).
It’s a minor moment, or at least it seems like one until the opening scenes of Gunn’s 2017 follow-up. Once we see Kurt Russell driving a muscle car to the tune of some seventies dad rock, it becomes clear that the aforementioned jackass will be playing a central role in the sequel.
And a jackass he later proves to be, in a pretty vicious twist which reveals he was responsible for the death of Peter’s mother. Short of saying Quill Senior was an EGO-maniac, Yondu couldn’t have set up the sequel’s conflict more clearly. In turn, his own heel-face turn, which sees him sacrifice himself to save Quill, made a real father figure of Yondu, thanks to a reliably rough-around-the-edges turn from Michael Rooker, Gunn’s muse since the gloopy days of 2006’s still-underrated Slither.
