10 More Insane Reasons Actors Didn't Return For Sequels
1. Rachel Weisz Didn't Want A 21 Year Old Son - The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor
Movie characters get recast all the time and for a plethora of different reasons, but it can be a little harder to swallow for all involved if said character, played by a certain actor, has made a real connection to audiences in their time in the role.
Throughout The Mummy, and its sequel The Mummy Returns, Rachel Weisz played an integral part of the story as Evelyn Carnahan opposite Brendan Fraser's Rick O'Connell. However, as the latter returned for the threequel after a seven-year gap, Weisz did not.
Instead, Evie was played by Maria Bello, which led to speculation and wonder as to why Weisz was replaced. According to director Rob Cohen, this had to do with the time jump between movies and the fact that Rachel Weisz wasn't happy with portraying the mother of a 21-year-old son.
Evie and Rick's boy was only seven during The Mummy Returns, but thanks to a 13-year time jump to Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Alex was now 21 years old, something that Cohen claims Rachel Weisz wanted nothing to do with, news he apparently received via an angry phone call.
