James Gunn introduced one of the most fun and joyous entries into the MCU with Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2014, but alongside the goofy hijinks of the team, a talking tree, and Star-Lord not being 100% a d*ck, there was a much darker side to the movie that is rarely ever referenced.

In the final battle between the Guardians and Ronan the Accuser, the titular team were trying to stop Lee Pace's villain from reaching Xandar's surface with the Power Stone. They had help from the Nova Corps, but ultimately their blockade failed.

Ronan broke through the barrier made up of Nova Corps pilots, and according to a study of kill counts in different movies, took the lives of over 80,000 people in one fell swoop. Thanos' destruction of Xandar off-screen in Infinity War is always thought of more when it comes to the Nova Corps, but the loss at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy would have been devastating.

However, the scenes directly following the battle don't really address said deaths. Countless partners widowed, children left without mothers or fathers, or possibly even both, and yet the focus was on Star-Lord's ship being fixed.
