10 More Movie Remakes Better Than The Original

5. The Blob (1988)

Along with John Carpenter's The Thing (referenced in WhatCulture's original article on this very subject), and The Fly, mentioned earlier in the list, 1988's The Blob makes up something of a trilogy of horror films from the '80s that managed to improve on their source material.

This, in the case of The Blob, was the 1958 effort featuring a 28-year-old Steve McQueen inexplicably playing a teenager. The story revolves around the titular gelatinous creature crashing to Earth, before killing and growing and killing and growing. If brutal honesty prevails, for a horror movie it leaves a lot to be desired, starting with the Blob itself.

While technology moved forward in the 30 years between the movies, it was the very nature of the thing that added to the remake. It felt somehow more menacing, aggressively targeting rather than slowly meandering. The 1988 version, on top of the heightened tension, could boast better dialogue, better supporting characters, and, thanks to some deviations from the original, a better tone and story in general.

Reportedly, there is yet another rework in production 36 years after the first remake, though whether it will ultimately share the rare title of being better than what came before is anyone's guess at this stage.
